Fund for Zach Gabbard set up at United Community Bank

A fund has been set up at United Community Bank in honor of Perham High School basketball player Zach Gabbard

Zach is a 17-year-old junior on the Yellowjacket boys basketball team who collapsed during a varsity game at D-G-F on Jan. 20.  After receiving emergency medical procedures, he was taken to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, where open heart surgery was performed.  Once stable, Zach was moved to the University of Minnesota on Sunday for more specialized care.

A fund has been set up at United Community Bank in Perham to help his family defray medical costs.  Friends can also visit his CaringBridge site to offer thoughts and prayers for his family.  Donationís can be made at any UCB location (Perham, Frazee, Deanís Country Foods in Perham) in the name of the Zach Gabbard Fund.  They can also be sent to United Community Bank at 155 Second Street SW, Perham MN  56573.

For more information, call United Community Bank at 218-346-5700, or go to their website, www.ucbankmn.com.

Please keep positive thoughts and prayers for Zach, his family, and the Yellowjacket team.

Very impressed with Luck, Harbaugh

I sure hope everyone out there had a great holiday season!  Itís been a while since I checked in, so letís catch up.

Iím writing this after watching the Orange Bowl between Stanford and Virginia Tech.  How impressive is Andrew Luck.  What a game he had.  What I loved even more was his post game comments.   Luck was asked about the difficult decision he had ahead of him about deciding to go pro.  He said I could have a lot more difficult decisions to make.  The he said, not to be rude, but I donít want to talk about that.  Letís talk about the great season we had, or the great game we just played.

I loved it.  As a reporter myself, I donít understand the need for other reporters to ask that kind of question in that moment.

Later in the press conference, Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh basically said the same thing to reporters when asked about his future.  He said hey, respect the game we just played.  There will be a time and place to address those questions sometime down the road.

I sometimes really donít like the way some ďbig-timeĒ reporters do their job.  And itís one reason I hesitated when opportunities came about to move up to ďbigger and betterĒ things.

That said, I think Harbaugh is a GREAT coach.  Iíve read reports that if he stayís in college, he will stay at Stanford.  I like that.  But I think heís going pro.  My hunch is that he will be roaming the sidelines in Denver next season.

Iíd LOVE to see Luck in purple next year, but thatís not likely to happen.  He wonít fall far enough down the draft for the Vikes, and they donít have the ďhootspahĒ to pull off a trade to move up.

I really like the permanent hire of Lesley Frazier for the Vikes.  Now, they need real football people filling roles like G.M. , V.P. for football operations.

I made some bold predictions earlier this season about the Gopher basketball team challenging for the Big 10 title.  Hmmm.  I might have jumped the gun on that one.  Maybe.  The Big 10 isnít quite as good as maybe people thought.  The are a deep conference, but I donít see the elite team.  Ohio State?  Maybe.   Michigan State?  Not sure about ďeliteĒ.  Purdue, Illinois, Minnesota?  All ranked, all O.K. teams with flaws.

That said, I donít think the Gophers have hit their stride yet.  And I think Tubby knows how to coach for the postseason.  Iím not as confident about my prediction of a Big 10 title for the Gophís, but Iím not bailing yet.

Iím really trying to like the Timberwolves.  They have some nice young players.  But I just donít like the NBA.  I have to admit I havenít really been into the NBA in a big way since the Showtime Lakers of the late-80ís.

The other day on SportsCenter, one of the plays of the day was a dunk by Trevor Ariza of New Orleans where he took like five steps before launching for the rim.  The traveling, the carries, the star-treatment for certain players, all the iso plays.  Not interested.

Iíll take a good game between any college teams over an NBA game any night.

Is anyone watching the Wild?  I used to be a big Wild fan, but just lost interest.  They donít offer anything, or any star play to really peek my interest anymore.

Bold predictions:  Oregon over Auburn for the NCAA title.  Atlanta and New England in the Super Bowl.
