Wow. What a
long, weird summer itís been.
Iíll admit it was nice sending the kids off to school. Since I work from home, itís sure been
nice for my yellow lab Moli and I to have the place to ourselves. And, since I kinda worked 4 jobs this
summer, itís very nice to devote my full attention to LakesAreaSports.com
There once was a time when I used to read Syd Hartmanís
column in the Star-Tribune pretty regularly. I didnít always like how he name dropped, but I liked how he
hit so many topics. That said, I
have a lot I want to get off my chest, so here it goes, Syd-style.
Letís start with the Twins. Well, where do you start with the Twins? Itís been another disappointing summer
at Target Field. There are
many places to point the finger, and Iím interested in pointing all of them
All Iíll say is this.
Iím hoping Josh Willingham sticks around and Justin Morneau can return
to his 30 HR, 100 RBI form. I like
Ben Revere and Denard Span and Joe Mauer is Joe Mauer, so you canít go wrong
there. Iíd like to see some of the
younger players show more consistency, both at the plate and in the field. As for the pitching? Well, they need an overhaul there.
I sure hope Terry Ryan can rebuild the system and get the
team back to pennant-winning contenders sooner rather than later.
The VikingsÖ.Well, I donít hold out much hope for the
Vikes. I love Adrian Peterson, but
I donít think heís ready to come back.
Nine months just doesnít seem like long enough for the kind of injury he
had. That could be trouble.
Iím not sold on Christian Ponder, and I donít think the team
improved from last year on defense.
I see the Vikes going 0-fer in the division (0-6). A 4-5 win season is all those in
Viking-land should expect.
LOVE the NFL and canít wait for this Sunday. Trying to talk my wife into letting me
get the RedZone channel through Arvig.
$49.95 for the entire season.
Check www.arvig.com for more info on
My bold prediction for the NFL? Maybe not so bold.
I like the Packers to win the NFC, and Houston to take the AFC. Iíd love to see the Texans win their 1st
title. I was a HUGE ďLuv Ya BlueĒ
fan of the old Houston Oilers.
Earl Campbell was one of my favorite athletes, ever. It would be nice to see their fans
rewarded with a title.
I like Atlanta and San Francisco as dark-horse teamís in the
NFC, and Baltimore and Denver could make runs in the AFC.
This is the 1st year in about 20 years that Iím
not in a fantasy football league.
Weíll see how that goes. I
always liked looking up how my guys were doing on Sundayís and Mondayís. But the last couple of years, I totally
lost interest in keeping up my rosters as the weeks and months of the season
Speaking of football, both the Hornet and Yellowjacket
football teams will have their home openerís Friday night, with both coming off
season-opening road wins.
I went to a pair of volleyball games last week, and my 1st
football game of the season, but the fall sports season really kicks into full
gear this week. Frazee and Perham
volleyball will have home matches this week. Check the schedule pages on LakesAreaSports.com for more on
Going to my 1st cross country meet tonight in
Wadena, and canít wait to see the Perham boys run. They are No. 1 in Class A, and were ranked No. 2 in the
country in a coaches poll this summer for schoolís their size. The Jacket girls are strong as well,
but no surprise there. As long as
Jeff Morris is in charge of the Yellowjacket program, they will among the
